Media Release: February 14, 2023

Elections Nova Scotia – Elections Nova Scotia (ENS) has awarded a contract through the Nova Scotia tender process to Scytl Canada Inc. (Scytl) to develop an internet voting solution.

In September 2022, ENS issued an RFP inviting qualified firms to submit proposals that include all related software services, IT infrastructure and hosting services, as well as training, support, and the full management of a highly secure internet voting solution. Scytl, was the successful vender in the bidding process.

“We are pleased to be moving forward with the development of this innovative voting method,” says Dorothy Rice, Chief Electoral Officer. “We plan to take a careful measured approach and are confident in Scytl’s ability to develop a safe and secure internet voting solution.”

Scytl is a provider of online voting systems and election technology. Headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, Scytl also has offices within North America and Asia-Pacific. Scytl’s solutions incorporate unique cryptographic protocols that ensure maximum security, transparency, and auditability in any type of election. Built on over 20 years of research, Scytl’s secure solutions have been successfully used in over 30 countries across the globe, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Australia.

“We are excited about this partnership with Elections Nova Scotia to work on such an important project,” says Ben Fagg, Vice President of Global Alliances, Scytl. “Canada is a key market for Scytl, and this alliance shows our consolidation as the main provider of online voting in the region.”

The Government of Nova Scotia made amendments to the Elections Act in 2021 to permit the use of internet voting, initially by those who are members of the Canadian Armed Forces stationed outside the province during an election event.

Elections Nova Scotia is a non-partisan and independent agency responsible for conducting provincial elections.
