West Hants Plebiscite Official Results

February 9, 2017

Results for the plebiscite held in the Municipality of the District of West Hants on February 7, 2017 are now official. On the question, “Are you in favour of the sale of liquor in your municipality in accordance with the Liquor Control Act?”, electors voted 269 Yes and 28 No.

With 4,182 eligible voters, this represents a 7% voter turnout. The Chief Electoral Officer notes that the cost per voter ratio is much higher during liquor plebiscites than during provincial general and by-elections. The cost per voter in the last general election was $14.97, and the cost per vote in this plebiscite will likely be in the $40 range.

As a result of this week’s plebiscite, all the area within the Municipality of the District of West Hants is now “wet” under the Liquor Control Act but areas of the Municipality remain “dry” under the Alcohol and Gaming Authority.

For clarification, establishments located anywhere within the Municipality with licenses issued by NSLC may now sell bottled liquor. Those same establishments would not be permitted to sell liquor by the glass for consumption if they are located in areas of the Municipality that are still dry under the authority of Alcohol and Gaming, as indicated in the shaded area of the map.

Elections Nova Scotia is an independent, non-partisan agency that is responsible for the administration of the Elections Act. Our mandate includes conducting liquor plebiscites as well as provincial general elections and by-elections. Over the history of our province, electors just like you have been called to vote on plebiscite questions ranging from whether cities and towns should amalgamate to whether liquor should be allowed in Nova Scotia at all.

A plebiscite is a vote on one specific question and the result of the vote can change a piece of legislation or can make something legal, like the sale of liquor.
